Quantum Book Review By: Manjit KumarThis is a great book. If you are interested in the weird and wonderful quantum world, then you will find this book a fantastic read that flows very well from chapter to chapter and instantly engages you.
What is particularly refreshing about Quantum is how it weaves in information about the personalities who were engaged in the scientific pursuit themselves rather than focusing exclusively on the science. However, this is not to the detriment of the science which is very much also discussed. The balance works very well.
The book is split into four parts:
The Quantum
Boy Physics
Titans clash over Reality
Does God play dice?
It takes us through the discoveries and experiments that hinted at the quantum world, and how some of the world's greatest physicists then struggled to understand or accept physics.
The famous physics Solvay conferences are discussed and how the personalities had many interesting discussions as they and their colleagues struggled to come to terms with the new weird and wonderful quantum world. How was it to be interpreted and did God really play dice? The book looks in detail at the debate between Bohr and Einstein over the genuine 'stuff' of reality.
If you know a little about what quantum theory is and says, then this book is a must read. And even if you know nothing about quantum theory then finding out more about it may be particularly exhilirating. Read it! Rating: 5 out of 5 Reviewer: dan moore |
